Who We Are

Frontier Farms is a partnership of family farmers, currently comprised of three farming families with a combined total of 87 years of experience!  And of course, other family members are involved in a variety of ways.  The base of our farming operation is in Central Illinois, near the small community of De Land.  The heritage goes back several generations to the mid-1800’s when ancestors settled in this area.  We live on and operate several Centennial Farms, those registered by the State of Illinois as being in the same family lineage for 100 or more years.  The operation also includes employees, some of which have been with us for a number of years.

    • Brett Hermann

Brett brings several years’ banking and management experience to Frontier Farms.  He holds a B.S. in Business Management from Greenville College.  Brett is the seventh generation farmer on the farm where he grew up!   He likes to connect with people, and enjoys helping others accomplish their goals.  Brett works on land acquisition, crop management, and marketing strategy.  Janelle is a full time elementary teacher, specializing in reading.  She earned a B.S. in education from Greenville College and an M.S. in Reading from Walden University.  She also teaches piano lessons at home.  Janelle helps with whatever is needed on the farm when she’s not in the classroom!

    • Jeff Hogan

Jeff has a wealth of knowledge and experience in farming operations derived from 43 years of production agriculture on his family farm.  He is very skilled at field operations and can diagnose and fix nearly anything mechanical.  Jeff handles planting and harvesting decisions along with machinery logistics.  Jeff and his wife Marta are parents of three grown children and 8 grandchildren.  Marta has made a full time career of helping on the farm and raising a family for 41 years.  She’s quite committed to valuable volunteer work with several organizations and lends a helping hand to the elderly.  Marta’s support with every aspect of farm life is instrumental to the operation.  And yes, she loves spending time with those 8 grandkids!

    • Ken Hermann

Ken has farmed for 39 years on and around the family’s registered Centennial Farm.  He received a B.S. from Illinois Wesleyan in 1973, attended Illinois State for ag classes, and has had continuing education through Professional Farmers.  Ken is keen on stewardship and risk management issues for the farm operations, and particularly enjoys building relationships with landowners and managers.  Ken and Chris have three adult children, one of whom is Brett.   Chris has a B.S. degree in education from Illinois State, and taught school for several years.  Recently retired from the University of Illinois, Chris’ farm work now includes managing FSA matters, office work, and running errands for the farm.
